Fuel Oil for Ferries

The Challenge

A ferry operator requested an independent assessment of fuel oil cleanliness from delivery into a bunker barge through to fuel supplied to vessels. Testing carried out as part of a Delta-Xero fuel filtration assessment revealed severe particulate contamination, with fuel failing to meet ISO 4406 minimum cleanliness standards and engine manufacturer requirements. In some cases, contamination levels were so high that accurate ISO readings could not initially be obtained, highlighting a critical operational risk.

Customer savings & impact

Following the implementation and verification of Delta-Xero fuel filtration, the operator achieved both direct operational and financial measurable benefits:

  • Avoided engine damage and premature component wear by restoring fuel to within ISO cleanliness limits

  • Reduced downtime and maintenance exposure, supporting more reliable ferry operations

  • Lower long-term operating costs, as the bunker tank itself began to clean over time, reducing the need for future tank flushing and helping lower emissions

The full case study explains how Delta-Xero fuel filtration recovered heavily contaminated fuel, what ISO cleanliness levels were achieved, and what this meant in  maintenance and cost terms.

Significant Financial Savings for Biffa

A Godswill baler, valued at approximately £500,000 and used for processing aluminium and cardboard, suffered five major breakdowns within just six months of installation. Despite being under warranty, the machine experienced two pump failures and three valve failures, resulting in £15,000 in direct repair costs and significant production downtime. Specialist oil analysis revealed that the heavily polluted waste-processing environment was introducing extreme levels of particulate and varnish-like products that conventional maintenance could not identify or remove.
